POWDERado

- the self-contained downdraft filter workstation for fingerprint powder application
Working with fingerprint powders is a common occurrence in the field of forensics. While changes have been made to improve powders over the years to make them safer and produce higher quality prints, working with powder still involves the production of a great deal of dust that shouldn’t be inhaled.

POWDERado is a workstation that contributes to the health and safety at a fingerprint expert's workplace. It provides an automated filter system, entirely independent from on-site ventilation. It is a perfect alternative to conventional fume hoods.

The working surface of POWDERado is made from non-magnetic stainless steel. This is especially of benefit when working with magnetic fingerprint powders. Below the working surface sits a combination of a pre-filter fleece and a fine particulate dust cassette H13. The pre-filter keeps larger dust particles out of the H13 cassette, reducing how frequently the filter must be replaced. The system can also be fitted with an optional activated carbon fleece filter to reduce evidence odors. These features both improve workplace safety, and help reduce operating costs.

  • The stainless steel surfaces of the POWDERado are durable and are resistant to the alcohol and peroxide-based cleaners needed for DNA decontamination. The other surfaces have been specially sealed to protect them. All these surfaces can be wiped with a damp microfiber cloth to clean them and remove excess dust and powder. The steel surfaces can also be cleaned with a stainless steel cleaner if desired.

  • POWDERado has two different filter stages. The H13 HEPA filter cassette can easily become saturated quickly when it is the only filter used, so we also include a pre-filter mat to filter out larger particulates that could quickly cause the HEPA filter to need replacement. This prolongs filter life and reduces the operating cost.

The pre-filter mat should be replaced after 25 hours of use. The HEPA filter is equipped with a sensor that will cause the system to notify the user when it is time to change the filter. The filter life will depend on the type of evidence being processed and how often it is used. Independent of the filter saturation, the filters should be replaced at least every 12 months.

Changing the prefilter mat and filter are both very simple. This can be done by any user in less than a few minutes and requires no special tools or training.

  • POWDERado has three flaps—one on the front and one on either side of the system. During evidence processing, dust and powder can easily become airborne and stick to non-ferro-magnetic surfaces or get inhaled.

The flap system is designed to help contain this dust and powder and direct it towards the filter system. The side flaps open to accommodate larger pieces of evidence that may need to be processed.

When the system is closed, it enters a standby mode and it runs short mini-cleaning cycles to keep the air in the enclosed workspace free from dust and powder. This also prevents airborne dust and powder from setting on evidence and prevents evidence from being disturbed if the user needs to take a break while working on it.

  • POWDERado is a very low maintenance system, like many of our other systems. Aside from regular cleaning, users simply need to change the filter when directed.

For quality assurance, we recommend that the unit be serviced regularly by an Attestor or Attestor certified partner.
For customers who require documented annual servicing and calibration as part of their ISO 17025 accreditation, we offer service contracts for regular service. These can also include parts warranties if desired. More information on this can be found under Service & Maintenance
